Nursing care pregnant women

Care of Parents- Pre conception

Even before the child is conceived, if the parents take care of their health following the principles in this site, it enhances the chances of conception and of conceiving a healthy normal, child. Poison habits like smoking, drinking etc reduce the fertility of both mother and father. In case the mother is in poor health and the fetus unlikely to survive, nature will initiate a miscarriage. So taking care of their own health even before conception is an important contribution of the parents towards the health of their prospective child. Care of Mother during pregnancy

Books upon books have been written about this subject. In a nutshell, the natural hygienic approach is as under:
- Pregnancy is not a sickness but a normal biological process. The pregnant mother should therefore be treated as a normal human being and not as a "sick" patient in need of constant medical care and advice
- Avoid all smoking, alcohol and drugs (medical or otherwise). Minimise the number and type of medical interventions, examinations, drugs, medicines etc to the level at which you are comfortable and feel you can be satisfied with.
- Follow the natural hygiene recommendations in this site, with a few modifications listed below
- Exercise programs should be modified to suit the age and health of the mother, the stage of pregnancy, prior exercise history, any problems faced during the pregnancy etc. Be very careful to not over-do things, but at the same time remember some exercise is required at all times to keep the body and muscle tone in good shape. A mother in poor physical condition is more likely to have problems during delivery.

Care of Nursing mothers
Nursing mothers should follow the same recommendatios as listed above. In particular take care of your protein, iron, calcium and Vitamin B12 requirements

Breast feeding
Is the best for both Mother and Child. Bottled milk should only be resorted to if there is no other option. Breast feeding should be carried on until at least 12 months.

Infant (formula) food
Should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Fruits, vegetables, blended salads and juices are much better options. Babies cannot digest starch until they are 12 months old, or even later, so the introduction of starches into the diet is best delayed. Introduction of solid foods into the diet and other related issues are involved topics and not possible to go into, in depth, here.

Healthy diet for children
-Children do as you do and not as you say. If they see you sticking to a particular form of diet, the chances of their adopting it are much higher
- Keep healthy foods and snacks available for kids around the house. Do not keep unhealthy options available (eg chocolates, coke etc)
- Do not force the children into anything. Suggest and leave it alone. If they try alternatives and fall sick then they will learn on their own.

Cannabis / Marijuana

Cannabis, also known as marijuana or marihuana, or ganja (from Hindi/Sanskrit: गांजा gānjā, hemp), is a psychoactive drug extracted from the plant Cannabis sativa, or more often, Cannabis sativa subsp. indica. The herbal form of the drug consists of dried mature flowers and subtending leaves of pistillate (female) plants. The resinous form, known as hashish, consists primarily of glandular trichomes collected from the same plant material. The major biologically active chemical compound in cannabis is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), commonly referred to as THC.

Humans have been consuming cannabis since prehistory, although in the 20th century there was a rise in its use for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. It is estimated that about four percent of the world's adult population (162 million) use cannabis annually and 0.6 percent (22.5 million) daily. The possession, use, or sale of psychoactive cannabis products became illegal in most parts of the world in the early 20th century. Since then, some countries have intensified the enforcement of cannabis prohibition while others have reduced the priority of enforcement.

Marijuana

  • Marijuana or ganja: the flowering tops of female plants, from less than 1% THC to 22% THC; the wide range is probably one of the reasons for the conflicting results from different studies.

Psychoactive potency by cannabis plant part is approximately as follows (descending order):

  1. Trichomes
  2. Female flowering buds
  3. Male flowering buds
  4. New shoots
  5. Leaves from flower buds
  6. Leaves in ascending order of size
  7. Stems of leaves (petioles) in ascending order of size
  8. Stems in ascending order of size
  9. Roots and seeds

In praise of California

In November, 1988, the electorate in California approved Proposition 103 to prevent the massive increases in premiums that were affecting all consumers looking for insurance. After major litigation to decide whether the Proposition was constitutional, it was finally implemented in May 1989 and rapidly revolutionized the rates of insurance across the state which fell by an average of 45% between 1989 and 2001. It is estimated that up to 2006, Californian drivers alone saved $62 billion on their auto insurance rates. Then the Consumer Watchdog combined with other socially active groups to force the insurance companies to abandon the practice of basing rates on the zip code and not your record as a driver. Now comes Assembly Bill 2800 which emerged from the Senate Appropriations Committee in August 2008. This is being treated as a slightly more controversial measure. The auto insurance industry is campaigning to allow a switch to mileage and use as criteria for fixing the premiums. It estimates that this could produce further average savings in premiums of about $275 per vehicle. It would work by placing a small monitoring device in every vehicle to assess how far you drive in a year and how well you drive. But this device is viewed as an invasion into the privacy of drivers. As a compromise, the Insurance Commissioner suggests that drivers could allow the insurers to make regular checks on the odometer rather than allowing electronic collection and transmission of data. If the electronic version of the plan does go ahead, it will allow companies to identify consistently low-risk drivers from the time of day they use the roads, the speed at which they drive and the distance they travel. Such drivers will receive the maximum discounts available. Those deemed more likely to have accidents from the way they drive will potentially pay more. The current system allows drivers to report their own mileage. The industry standard is to offer discounts to drivers who do less than 10,000 miles per year. Obviously, there's a temptation in difficult economic times for drivers to underestimate their mileage to gain the discounts. This proposed device will reward the genuine drivers and charge a fair premium to the others. It will also help to save the planet because drivers who maintain a lower average speed use less gas and so produce less emissions. For once, the auto insurance industry would be helping to fight global warming which is very public-spirited it.
